About the Animal Law Center

Accredited in A++ Grade with a score 3.60 on a 4 point scale by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), this premier institution of higher learning has steadfastly been recognized as amongst the top three law schools in India. The Animal Law Centre (ALC) at NALSAR is the country’s first and so far, the only centre dedicated to research on animal laws. In the past, we have successfully run a one-year PG Diploma in Animal Protection Laws. We had also organized a national teacher’s training program on Animal Laws, chaired by Prof. David Favre and a series of guest talks in the school, the latest by Prof. Kristen Stilt. We have organized more than 10 judges and advocate training programs all over India. The centre also runs a clinic in collaboration with Buchmann School of Law, Tel Aviv University. Currently, we are working on a four-part funded farm animals project titled, “The True Cost of Eggs” and a project which involves publishing a country report on zoonotic diseases in collaboration with Animal Law & Policy Program, Harvard Law School. The Centre has signed an MOU with International Center for Animal Law and Policy (ICALP), University of Barcelona Spain & Animal Law and Policy Program, Harvard Law School. About our knowledge & technical partner: HSI/India

Humane Society International and its partner organisations together constitute the world’s largest force for animal protection. We work lawfully and professionally, building relationships with government authorities and elected official, business leaders and other decision-makers to identify and implement workable solutions to animal welfare concerns. Humane Society International/India (HSI/India) is the Indian chapter of Humane Society International. HSI has been operating in India for 12 years. The organization was formally incorporated as an Indian NGO in 2012. The core goals of the organization are eradicating rabies through humane street dog population management, capacity building for Indian animal welfare organisations, strengthening farm animal and wildlife protections and ending animal testing.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop and publish research projects on issues of farm animal protection.
  • Identify senior lawyers and academicians to co – author white papers.
  • Act as a spokesperson for ALC and represent the center in technical meetings, conferences and other forums.
  • Contribute actively and constructively to the debate regarding the animal welfare issues with a focus on factory farming.
  • Regularly monitor peer reviewed research literature and circulate relevant material within the HSI India Farm Animal Protection team.
  • Create curriculums on animal welfare laws for seminar courses and/or diploma/masters courses.
  • Conducting trainings and workshops on Animal welfare issues.
  • Organizing academic conferences and assist in running animal law journal.
  • Any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time by the Faculty Coordinator of ALC.

 

Qualifications/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in law and/or a Post Graduate in any field.
  • At least 1-2 years research experience is preferable.
  • Commitment to ALC’s objectives and mainstream operating style.
  • Superior research and analytical capability.
  • Fluent oral and written English.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to communicate complex subject matter to a variety of audiences and to build and maintain a network.
  • Outgoing and personable manner.
  • Ability to work under pressure as part of a team or independently.
  • Determined and willing to go the extra mile to gather information.
  • Willingness to travel as needed within India, and occasionally internationally.
