Dr Shivshanker Menon is the former Foreign Secretary of India who also served as the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister from 2011-2014. His long career in public services spans across the field of diplomacy, atomic energy, disarmament policy, national security and India's international relationships.
His talk comes at a time when New Delhi has been making enthusiastic efforts to renegotiate the terms of India’s engagement with the world. Political commentators have argued that the 'Modi Doctrine' has been effective in strengthening India's image at the global platform and overcoming historical hesitations. However, on the other side New Delhi’s relationship with Islamabad lies in tatters, its rapport with Russia is under a cloud, and the bonhomie with Beijing has turned into distinct acrimony especially with the recent border standoff. We had Dr. Venkat Iyer (Senior Lecturer in Law, Ulster University, Northern Ireland) who spoke on 'Brexit - the Legal Dimensions'
This talk explains the background to the recent decision of the British people to take the United Kingdom out of the European Union, and outline the legal implications of that decision. It will, among other things, describe the landmark case decided by the UK Supreme Court in January 2017 in which a majority of judges insisted on parliamentary approval for the government's decision to trigger the Brexit process.

Upendra Baxi is a legal scholar, since 1996 professor of law in development at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. He has been the vice-chancellor of University of Delhi (1990–1994), prior to which he held the position of professor of law at the same university for 23 years (1973–1996). He has also served as the vice-chancellor of the University of South Gujarat, Surat, India (1982–1985).
In 2011, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, by the Government of India

With degrees in Law and Economics, Vijaya Nagarajan researches and teaches in the areas of regulation, corporate governance, sustainability and corporate responsibility, competition law and policy and legal spatialities and gender equality. She has published widely and undertaken several consultancies in these areas.
Vij was awarded the Faculty of Arts Higher Degree Research Award for 'Building an Inclusive Research Culture' in December 2012. Currently she is engaged in a large research consultancy with the Asian Development Bank on the design and implementation of pilots programs to economically empower Pacific women to engage in the private sector.

As part of the Lecture Series on Constitutionalism, Nalsar University of Law has hosted Justice (Retd.) Ruma Pal for a talk on September 8, 2016 (Thursday). The discussion was centered on Article 44 of the Constitution which contemplates the creation of a Uniform Civil Code. The talk was scheduled during the 11:30 AM - 1 PM slot at the SAARCLAW Centre.
Justice Pal had started legal practice at the Calcutta High Court and subsequently joined the bench. She served on the Supreme Court between 1999-2006 and is widely considered to be among the best justices in the post-independence era. Justice Pal has recently revised M.P. Jain's commentary on the Indian Constitution and frequently contributes to journalistic and academic publications.
Prof. Baxi is currently a Professor of Law at the University of Warwick. He is noted for his pedagogic and research contribution, and is known the world over for his work in areas like discourse on the third world and International law, sociological studies of human rights theory and practice, comparative constitutionalism, human rights responsibility in corporate governance and business conduct, and critical studies of globalisation of law. He has contributed significantly to the renovation of legal teaching and research in South Asia and policy-making in India.
