Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).
 
Admission Criteria:
 
icon To be admitted to the candidature for a Doctoral Degree an applicant shall have:
 
icon obtained a Master’s Degree in Law from any recognised University securing not less than 55% marks or its equivalent in grade
or
icon obtained a Master’s Degree in Law from any recognised University with 50% marks or its equivalent in grade and have had at least five years full-time teaching / judicial / professional / administrative experience in the subject in a recognised college / University
or
icon obtained a Degree in Law and M.Phil in Social Sciences or Humanities or Sciences from any recognised University with not less than 55% marks or its equivalent in grade
or
icon Ph.D. in any discipline
or
icon obtained a Degree in Law and M.Phil in Social Sciences or Humanities or Sciences from any recognised University with 50% of marks and have had at least five years full time teaching / judicial / professional / administrative experience in the subject in a recognised University / College
or
icon Judge of any State High Court in India or Supreme Court of India
or
icon obtained 2-Years Master’s in Taxation and Business Laws offered by NALSAR Pro with not less than 55% marks
or

Note : The topic should be in taxation and related subjects and the Degree to be awarded shall be Ph.D. in Taxation

Provided that candidates with qualifications in Social Sciences, Humanities and Sciences shall be admitted to the programme if the research they wish to pursue interfaces with the discipline of Law.

Note : The requirement of M.Phil. (in clause iii & iv) in courses where M.Phil. is not awarded will be relaxed.

The requirement of Degree in Law will be relaxed in case of candidates who want to register for Ph.D. in NALSAR in social sciences topic which has an interface with law; and the Degree to be awarded shall be Ph.D. in Social Sciences with Law.

Provided also candidates who have passed the Company Secretary examination conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and are awarded the Associate Membership of the Institute (ACS) shall be eligible for admission to the programme if the research they wish to pursue interfaces with the discipline of Law.

Note :  These applicants should undergo a research methodology course for a period of not less than six months as prescribed by the Research Committee and secure a pass before the registration is confirmed.

   
icon Before recommending an applicant as a candidate the Research Committee shall be satisfied that adequate supervisory and other research facilities are available in the field in which the candidate is to be registered.
 
Categories of enrolment:
a. Full-time enrolment
  icon Enrolment for the Ph.D. Programme shall ordinarily be full-time. The candidate shall put in a minimum of two-years residence of which at least 18 months shall be in the University. There shall thus be provision for the candidate to earn credits for research work done outside the University
  icon Three years shall be the maximum period in which a full time candidate should complete the work and submit it for evaluation
     
b. Part-time enrolment
   There shall be provision for part-time enrolment for the Ph.D. programme.
  icon A Part-time candidate shall put in a minimum of three years of part-time study in the University including time spent for research at any other place with the permission of the Supervisor.
Provided that the part-time candidate shall put in residence in the University for at least a total period of 18 months spread over the three year period
  icon Five years shall be the maximum period in which the part-time candidate shall complete work and submit it for evaluation.
   
icon In case of both part-time and full-time enrolment the Supervisor of the candidate shall ensure monitoring of the research work done by the candidate outside the University campus by insisting on production of adequate proof of work done.
   
icon Expiry / Lapse of Enrolment:
  Enrolment for the Ph.D. shall be deemed to have lapsed after three years from the date of Enrolment in the case of full-time students and five years in the case of part-time students. In such cases, however the Research Committee, on the application by the concerned student, may give extension of time for a period of six months at a time but for a maximum period of not more than one year.
 
Supervisors of Research:
The Research Committee shall appoint one or more persons holding an appointment with the     University to supervise programme of study of a candidate admitted to the Ph.D. programme.

Provided that, when the programme of study so requires, an external supervisor possessing expertise and experience in the area of study may be appointed, in addition to at least one internal supervisor who shall be a full time academic staff member.
