Dr. Unni, who has done his Ph.D. in Intellectual Property Law, teaches the same at the under-graduate, post-graduate and proximate education programs at NALSAR. He also had been the Administrator of “Microsoft Intellectual Property Scholarship Program” established by the Microsoft Corporation to promote original research in IP Law.  Earlier he worked as a Fellow-IPR with the National Innovation Foundation (Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India) at Ahmedabad. Apart from writing in international journals like Richmond Journal of Law and Technology, he has authored a book which has got global attention and has been prominently cited in judgments dealing with the subject. Other than IP Law his present teaching and research interests include Banking Law and Data Protection Law. In December 2007, he was awarded the prestigious Max Planck-India Fellowship, for the term 2008-11 by the Max Planck Society, Germany and in the process became the first to be awarded the said fellowship outside the stream of natural sciences.

He has been consulted on many programs dealing with IPR and data protection by various premier institutions like the Fulbright Commission, IIT Kharagpur, European Commission, National Law School-Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, CRID-University of Namur (Belgium), Munich Intellectual Property Law Center, Hastings Center-New York, National Institute of Fashion Technology-Hyderabad, various constituent bodies of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) like Directorate of Rice Research, National Academy of Agricultural Research Management etc. Dr. Unni also has the rare distinction of serving in the Selection Panel of Fulbright Fellowship in Law for 3 consecutive terms from 2005.

Dr. Unni has been invited as resource person in many international seminars and conferences organised by world-renowned institutions like Max Planck Institute for IP Law-Munich, Stanford Law School, WIPO Worldwide Academy, Michigan State University College of Law etc. In August-September 2006, he was invited by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program organised at Washington D.C. In July 2007 he participated as the sole panelist from India for the “Roundtable Session with IP Experts”, held at the National University of Singapore, as part of the Regional Capacity Building Program in IP Law. In May 2008 he was invited as a resource person for the Indo German Conference on Intellectual Property Law organised at Freiburg and Munich by Albert Ludwigs University-Freiburg and BMW Foundation. Since 2007, he is the Editor-in-Chief of NALSAR’s IP Law Journal titled Indian Journal of Intellectual Property Law (IJIPL).
