Dr. T. Kannan holds Ph.D from Osmania University, Hyderabad through Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore. He was awarded Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) Fellowship for his Doctoral study. He had also received Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarship for Doctoral studies in India (for the year-2002) from Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, New Delhi. He had published a research paper in the edited Occasional Paper (Enreca Occasional Paper) series of Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. He had also published a paper in the ISEC working paper series of Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. The paper entitled “Water, Left Politics and the Manufactured Dissent: Understanding the Politics of Political Mobilization of Local People against Coca Cola in Gangaikondaan, Tamil Nadu”, has been accepted for 13th Biennial Conference of the International Association for the Study of the Commons.  He had published few book reviews

Prior to joining NALSAR University of Law, he was a Visiting Fellow at Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE), Bangalore. As a Visiting Fellow, he was engaged in a research on “Public Participation in Environmental Decision-Making towards Conservation and Protection of Water Resources in the Village Panchayats of Tamil Nadu”. He had worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Environment and Development (CISED), a centre of excellence promoted by the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. For his Post-Doctoral study, he worked on the broad theme of the impact of the political struggles of environmental movements on the political theorization of notions of ‘Rights’, and ‘Justice’. As Research Associate at Centre for the Study of Casteism, Communalism and Law (CSCCL) of NLSIU, He was engaged in the research project on “ the study of Performances of Special Courts in India”, which the CSCCL of NLSIU has taken up for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. He taught Sociology for a brief period for the B.A., LL.B (HONS.) students at National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore.
